Smart For Life Cookie

Thanks to Smart for Life for sending me their chocolate chip cookies to sample. Smart for Life is known for their "cookie" and "cupcake" diets. To be quite honest, I am not a fan of the so-called "cookie" diets or other fad diets out there. I would probably not last a day on these types of diets. As you can see from the picture below, the cookies are only 100 calories each and they are very small (smaller than my palm), so I personally could never eat these as a meal and feel full... I couldn't probably eat them as a snack either. However, I ate these cookies as part of a snack today with my protein shake and they are delicious treat to enjoy... and a much healthier alternative to the traditional chocolate chip cookie. They are all natural, 60% organic and contain 6 grams of protein per cookie!

The cookies come in two flavors:
* chocolate chip- they sent me this flavor.
* oatmeal raisin

Huge thanks to Thomas for sending me samples of their bagel thins to review. They sent an OVERLY generous package- 3 packs of bagels (everything, whole wheat and plain flavored), a jar of peanut butter, a jar of strawberry jam, and a Toaster(!)

Bex Runner

Thanks to Bex runner for sending me one of their innovative hand held cooling devices to use while exercising. Basically, it's an adjustable strap that fits around your hand with a small cooling pouch attached that rests comfortably in your palm. I put mine in the freezer the night before and used it the next morning (although it probably takes only a few hours). Basically, the gel freezes in the pouch and rests against your palm and acts as a cooling mechanism for your body. The gel stays cool up to 1 hour in use and the device is reusable for a year.

How does Bex runner work? According to this website, "The BEX Runner focuses on the unique radiator-like qualities of the palm of the hand. The key to this naturally occurring phenomenon is a unique system of blood vessels found beneath the palm surface, called arteriovenous anastomoses (AVAs), which brings heatedblood to the skin surface and returns cooled blood back to your body’s core. BEX Runner maximizes this phenomenon by keeping your body’s natural radiator (the palms) cool."

I wore this while I ran up and down the stairs this morning. I have taken a hiatus from running outside for a while, but this worked PERFECT when I was running up and down the stairs (working my buns!) Kept me cool in my hot stairwell (I live in a 7 story apartment complex).

I recommend you try this very awesome product! They sell for $49.99 on their website here

Join them on facebook!

I also like them because they make me feel taller :) These add a good inch to two inches to my size... seeing that I am only 5'1, this is a confidence booster.

These shoes were a hit at work, too! One of my co-workers practiced walking in them and she said "I need to get myself a pair of these."

Myweigh scales

Thanks to Myweigh for sending me their kitchen scale to review. They send me the KD-8000. The KD-8000 weighs up to 8000 grams. I like the fact that it has a removable protective cover. I tend to spill my protein powder all over the place when I weigh mine, so this is great. In addition, it has a bakers math/percentage weighing, so you can weigh ingredients in proportion to the main ingredient. As you can see below, the scale comes with a backlit 5 digit LCD display with large easy to read numbers. It reads in grams, ounces, kilograms, pounds and pounds: ounces.

Ever since getting on my health kick, I use scales to measure my food rather than using measuring cups because it's more accurate. This is a great addition to my kitchen!

In addition to the KD-8000, myweigh offers a number of other pocket/mini scales, medium scales and large scales. Be sure to check them out!

My favorite so far is the fruit and nut. Look at the huge pieces of nuts in it. Soo good!

Thanks to Tofu Xpress for sending me one of their tofu presses to sample. I thought this was a great idea so I was so excited to try it. I used it once and it made a HUGE difference. I normally use a 100 paper towels and a plate to press out the water and it didn't come out nearly as good as this. So, not only does it work better, but it also saves me lots of paper towels :)

By removing the water, you can bake, fry or grill easier. You can also add the marinating tray and marinate it. I can't wait to try that next.

Not only can you use it on tofu, but you can also use it for removing the water from cheeses, frozen veggies, eggplant, onions.

One tofu express costs approximately $39.95 and can be purchased here.

Sea vegetables are virtually fat-free, low in calories and one of the richest sources of minerals in the vegetable kingdom as they have ready access to the abundant minerals found in the ocean. Nourishment is acquired across the sea vegetable’s entire surface through the gentle wave action of underwater currents.

You can eat them out of the bag or top on soups, salads and in sandwiches. I topped mine on top of my stir fried veggies and chicken and it was delicious.

They are strangely addictive :)

Be sure to look them up on facebook!

Quest Bar

Thanks to Quest Bar for sending me samples of their bars to review. I am a huge fan of protein bars because they are so convenient to take on the go... and easier than whipping out a tupperware of chicken. I do try to limit my protein bars to one a day, but they make the perfect afternoon snack. well, I was dying to try both flavors that Quest had sent me, so I brought two to work to me (well... and I overslept this morning and didn't have time to make anything else).

The flavors:
* Vanilla Almond Crunch
* Peanut Butter Supreme

The bars range from 220-230 calories each. They have 20 grams of protein each and 11-12 grams fat! Bars have 19-20 grams fiber (15 grams from dietary fiber and only 4-5 grams of non-fiber carbs.) There are no trans fats. Read more about their nutritional info here.

Ingredients include: whey protein isolate, milk protein isolate, chicory root fiber, natural almond and peanut butters, peanuts and almonds, sea salt and natural flavors, lo han guo and sucralose.

So, not only are the stats and ingredients are great, but they also taste delicious! I recommend you try these bars.

Check out their blog here.

Pretzel Crisps

Thanks to Pretzel Crisps for sending me samples of their pretzels. They sent me the following flavors: classis, tuscan three cheese, cinnamon toast and supreme. These pretzels are so delicious and perfect for snacking and to bring to parties.

The Classic is the most pretzel-like (plain) flavor. Perfect for a treat. 11 crisps only have 110 calories no fat, 23 grams carbs, 2 grams sugar and 3 grams protein. There are no trans fats and no cholestrol.

I LOVE the three cheese and cinnamon toast. The flavors are unique... although I must say it was very hard for me to put them away after one serving. They are so delicious I could see myself eating a whole bag in one sitting :) The three chese reminded me of an asiago bagel and the cinnamon toast was like cinnamon bread. So good!

The supreme is awesome too. Reminds me of an everything bagel. It is sprinkled with garlic, onion, poppy and caraway seeds.

Not only do they have these flavors, but they also sell Deli pretzel crisps in original garlic and everything flavors. Also, they have various limited edition flavors too! Oh wow, those peanut butter and chocolate ones look ridiculously good :)

Homemade Almond Milk/ Casein Pudding

I had a long day.... I am off to bed soon, but I wanted to share this awesome new recipe I found long ago and tried... homemade almond milk! It is so easy to make. I took 40 calories of almonds, 1/2 cup water and blended it until pureed in my magic bullet. You can add sugar free honey, cinnamon, or stevia for flavoring. Or even cocoa powder! I made it plain tonight since I knew I was mixing with protein powder. Once I made it, I added one scoop casein protein powder, 2 ice cubes and some xantham gum... and made this awesome, awesome chocolate pudding that was perfect for a nighttime dessert! It was wicked thick.

I'm baaaack!

After taking a bit of a blogging hiatus, I am back :) I really missed it, but I found myself busy with everything else going on in my life.

I do have a bunch of updates. I have made a bunch of changes in my life recently, so I have been a bit busy... the most recent includes TAKING A RUNNING BREAK! To others, this might not seem like a big deal. But to me, this is a huge lifestyle change. I have been an avid runner since I turned 17... that would be 12 years!!! I even told one newspaper writer, that running, to me, was like brushing my teeth. Had to do it everyday. But, to be honest, it just wasn't fun for me anymore. I realized this after my last Boston Marathon. My sister laughed at me in the morning of the marathon when I told her, "I wish I was anyone who WASN'T running the marathon today." She asid she felt so lucky to be running it. I don't know what it was... the pressure of running, the stress on my body, but it was NOT FUN for me.... until I crossed the finish line :) Not that marathons are not always "fun..." but this one I just dreaded the whole time. And lately, my runs have been dreadful. Not sure if I am in a funk or what. But, I am listening to my body and taking a break! No cardio until I get my groove back.

Second, I put back on another 10 pounds. I got too skinny. I didn't mean to get so thin, but it just happened. I know my self esteem had dropped after I lost my job a couple of years ago, but it seemed like I blamed myself for everything and the only way to shift my focus from being depressed about lowing my job was to focus on food and exercise. And of course, being the perfectionist I am, I took it too far.

With that in mind, I have decided to follow a lower carb diet. Not low carb, but not as many carbs as when I am running 4-6 miles per day. I go to the gym and lift weights for about 40 minutes. I feel just as great after this type of workout than I did when I was running. For the last couple of months, I had switched to a low fat and moderate carb and moderate protein diet (a "runner's diet"), but I have decided I just can't follow that plan. Once I have one piece of bread, I can eat a whole loaf :) I am a carb addict. I don't feel myself getting full on low fat diets. Plus, I miss my peanut butter and coconut oil...

As far as my blog goes, I am not sure how much I will be blogging. I don't want to describe all my daily meals, since I think, knowing myself, it is sort of self-destructive. I am trying not to obsess with numbers, but I wil

Turning creamy peanut butter into crunchy peanut butter:
So, this is probably not the most genius idea, but I thought at the time I was a genius for thinking it up. I LOVE CRUNCHY peanut butter. It kicks creamy peanut butter's butt :) I mean, I am not biased... I would never turn down a peanut butter, but I like creamy better. So, I had a yummy jar of creamy sunbutter... and took a bag of nuts and cruched it with the back of a knife and then mixed them in together.

Coconut cinnamon pancakes:
- 2 tablespoons coconut flour
- 3 egg whites
- cinnamon
- stevia

- nature's hollow sugar free maple syrup
- tablespoon of peanut butter

Directions: mix all ingredients and microwave for about 2 minutes. top with more cinnamon, maple syrup and peanut butter.

Strawberry Coconut Pudding
Oh my gosh, this is delicious!

- 1 serving syntha 6 strawberry protein powder
- 2 oz lite coconut milk
- xantham gum
- ice

Directions: blend in magic bullet. It make this wicked thick creamy pudding!
